FERS Immediate Retirement

To be eligible for FERS Immediate Retirement, you must meet a combination of years in service and age requirements.

One number you need to know is your Minimum Retirement Age (MRA). Your Minimum Retirement Age (MRA) will be different depending on when you were born. What's my MRA?

You are eligible for Immediate Retirement and will get 100% of your retirement benefit if you are...

  • Minimum Retirement Age(MRA) and have 30 years of service
  • At least 60 years old and have 20 years of service
  • At least 62 years old and have 5 years of service

Early FERS Retirement?

You may be eligible for Immediate FERS Retirement with a reduced pension if you are...

  • MRA and 10 – 29 years in service

While OPM techically considers this a type of Immediate Retirement, most people refer to this as Early Retirement.

You should know that when you retire at your MRA with 10 to 29 years in service, you will not receive 100% of your FERS pension. Click on this link to find out more about Early FERS Retirement

When Do I Get My First Pension Check?

When you retire under Immediate Retirement - you are eligible to start receiving your FERS pension/annuity within 30 days.

Even though you *can* start receiving your check in 30 days... that doesn't mean that you *will*.

I tell people that their retirement may be *effective* in 30 days, but that does not mean that it is *payable* in 30 days.

I can tell you from my experience with Federal Employees, it actually takes several months to receive your first check.
